We would like to share a little about our country, specifically outsourcing, culture, and visiting.
Outsourcing
Many refer to the Philippines as the outsourcing capital of the world. In fact, Information Technology Outsourcing is one of the largest sources of income for our economy and a major contributor to the growing middle class, and we are proud to be a part of that. Some of the driving factors for the success of outsourcing here are:
Proficiency in English: We speak English since birth, and it is an official language here. English is taught and used in schools and colleges here as it is in the countries we service.
Low Cost: Most publications agree that the countries we serve will save 60% and 80% because the cost of living index here is lower compared to developed countries, as evidenced by the cost of savings on wages even for highly-skilled workforce.
Similar Culture: Western culture is more a part of our culture and daily lives than it is in any other country offering outsourcing services, so we can more easily identify, connect, and communicate with our clients. This does not mean there is no challenge, but it does mean there is a narrower culture gap than anywhere else and generally we can learn and overcome barriers.
High Literacy: Within the outsourcing sector, 95% of us have undergraduate degrees. Across all of the Philippines, the literacy rate is 91% and increasing to 98% in metro areas.
Culture
Describing our multiracial culture, just like in other countries with diverse languages, ethnicities, and foreign influences, could be a challenge but something we would like our clients to understand. Allow us to start by introducing a cultural trait.
Pakikisama, which means ‘getting along’. For example, not rocking the boat or overlooking small indiscretions for the sake of preserving peace in the family, personal, and/or business relationship. Preserving the peace can lead to not speaking up, not offering another idea, not wanting to offend, etc. True, this can happen everywhere but in most cases, it is an individual trait while here it is a cultural trait. So, encourage you staff here, more that you would there, to speak up, be creative, challenge, etc.
Family is the foundation of our social life. The elderly are honored and respected and children are taught to respect to their elders. Extended families often live together and sometimes in larger groups in separate houses on the same piece of land.
Bayanihan is a term which means ‘Filipinos help each other — without expecting anything in return and especially in times of need’.
Humble and respectful are two words you will use often once you visit.
